Best Practices when Transferring Routes

When transferring a route, it is important to understand that every navigation system uses different road data and different algorithms to calculate a route. This can lead to different results when transferring a route from Kurviger to a different system, like Garmin or Tom Tom. Even when you stay within the Kurviger universe, if you use different route options or try the same route after some times has passed, it is possible that the route is not the same again. Over the time, some roads are closed due to construction, other roads are build, and the road network changes. When you use BRouter to recalculate a route, the results can also differ.

If you want to make sure that a route stays as closely as possible to your originally planned route, here are some best practices that you can follow.

The first step is to make sure that the route you planned is actually behaving the way you expect.

  1. You can use the feature “Snap every waypoint to the closest street”. This moves your waypoints onto the actual street and avoids that your navi might use the wrong road.
  2. Check where you placed your waypoints. It happens often that waypoints are placed on crossings, turns, roundabouts, or on small side roads, instead of the actual road you wanted to follow. Therefore, check where you placed your waypoints.
  3. Check which roads Kurviger is using. If you are a Kurviger Tourer and Tourer+, you can also see more details about the road and can identify potentially closed roads or unpaved roads. You can place additional shaping points to change your route.
  4. You can check where Kurviger is turning by showing the turn instructions on the map. This can help to identify critical points along the route.

To avoid that your route is changed by a different system you can add more shaping points along your route. Your navigation system will try to calculate a route along these points. Try to place as many as needed but as less as possible and try to place them cleverly on important parts of the route.

The Kurviger export offers to place additional waypoints automatically, this works well for many situations, but the best results are achieved manually.

  1. Export your route as .kurviger file or save it in the Kurviger Cloud.
  2. (If you use the .kurviger file, import it as Overlay again.)
  3. Now you will see your original route as Overlay and your regular route.
  4. When you change the route options, your route might change, if it is different, add shaping points until it is similar to your Overlay.
  5. Using the fastest route with no avoidances and still having the same route as before is usually enough to have most navigation systems follow your planned route.

Now you have to transfer your route to your navigation device. When you load your route some navigation devices offer to show the track as an overlay, you can do this to see differences between your planned route. If this is not possible, you can compare the distance of the Kurviger route to your navi. If there are larger differences, something might be off. In this case, we recommend a detailed check.
