Exchanging routes between Google Maps and Kurviger and vice versa

(VERSION 2018-10-22a - please test and send comments where appropriate!)

All the following steps were tested on an Android 6 smartphone (internet connection necessary):

Preparation: Open https://mapstogpx.com (or any other application / website, which can transform a GMaps URL into a GPX file)

1. Create a route by GMaps (in Browser or Android App).

GMaps Browser Version:

2. Open “3 bar menu” in the upper left corner.

3. Click on “Share or embed map” and then on “Copy link”.

4. Open https://mapstogpx.com (see above) in your PC browser.

GMaps Android App Version:

[DOES NOT WORK AT PRESENT: SEE BELOW]

2. Click “Share directions” in the “3 dots menue” in the upper right corner of GMaps.

3. Click (= send send the URL to) “Clipboard” (or send it to yourself or others by E-Mail or SMS or, as in my case, to a second WhatsApp acount, which is the fastest way in most situations).

4. Open https://mapstogpx.com (see above) in your Smartphone browser.

GMaps Browser AND Android App Version:

5. Insert here the “Clipboard” (or the URL stored before) and click “Let's go”.

[THIS WORKS IF URL COMES FROM GMAPS BROWSER VERSION, BUT FAILS AT PRESENT IF URL COMES FROM GMAPS APP VERSION]:

GMaps Browser Version:

6. The gpx will be created and downloaded to the PC.

7. Open this GPX file in Kurviger Browser version as usual via “Import” as a new route.

GMaps Android App Version:

6. The gpx will be created and downloaded automatically to the smartphone, and at least my Android offers instantly after download to open the downloaded file (some seconds at the bottom of the screen), so just click on the “Open” button.

7. The gpx will be opened as new route in Kurviger App.

The procedure vice versa (Kurviger > Maps) means showing a Kurviger route via GPX in GMaps for several purposes like quickly getting to the starting point of a Kurviger route:

IMPORTANT: Beginning steps (1-13) work only in the browser version of Maps [there is no way to “Create Map” in “Your Places” by the Map app - or??]

1. Export a Kurviger route as GPX, check “Track”, “Waypoints” and “many”.

2. Open GMaps in browser.

3. Open GMaps Menu (3 bars in the upper left corner).

4. Open “Your Places”.

5. Open “Maps”.

6. Open “Create Map”.

7. Open “Import”.

8. Import (by drag&drop or by filename) the GPX.

9. Kurviger Route will be shown in GMaps.

Now you may:

10. Click on the starting point of the shown Kurviger route.

11. Click on the “Directions to here” symbol - the navigation menu opens with this starting point as destination.

12. Enter your real starting point, for example your home address.

13. Now GMaps shows you a fast route to the starting point of your Kurviger route.

Now you may continue:

14. Your new “New Places Map” is shown in Android GMaps too. You can long tap on the starting point of your Kurvinger route and GMaps will offer you one (or more) fast and direct navigation(s) to the starting point of your Kurvinger route (as in 13) (which indeed should be the same as shown in the browser version before, but perhaps completed with alternate routes like GMaps often does if possible).

In GMaps app I store ready routes simply by the following steps:

15. In Navigation mode open the menu (3 dots in the upper right corner).

16. Click on “Add route to Home screen” .

17. GMaps will confirm by a short screen message.

18. Now a link symbol button to this specific route appears on the desktop, where it is to find again quickly every time it is needed during travelling and a simple click on the symbol opens this route in GMaps directly and starts navigation mode - what can be done easily even while riding/driving.

19. When finished the trip I store all routes for later use by a simple drag&drop moving of the link button to a special subdirectory “Routes”, in which I can start navigation for every route again by simply clicking the symbol as above.
